Three children, all ages 3 or younger, were found among a group of homeless people in Portland, Ore., cops said.
CNN reported that the children haven't been identified and that police are looking into their stories.
Officers got a call at about 9:25 a.m. Thursday from a man saying he heard children's voices coming from a shed behind his house. Upon arrival, they found several homeless people in an abandoned residence and three "olive-skinned" children, the station reported.
"Then the lady cop came over and said there's three babies back there. They called DHS. It was heartbreaking to see those little kids come out," another neighbor, Judy Baxter, told KPTV. "It was sad. (They were) given stuffed animals. Two (of the children) were walking, the cop had the other in the arms."
The youngest is between 8 and 15 months old and only 15 pounds. Another girl, who weighs 28 pounds, is about 2 years old. The third is a boy, about 3 years old.
Interviews with the homeless people in the group revealed that the kids' mother may have abandoned them on Wednesday night. They are all now in protective custody.
Cops are looking for the public's help in identifying the children. Anyone who has information about their identity or the circumstances under which they came to the vacant residence in Southeast Portland is asked to contact the DHS Child Abuse Hotline at 503-731-3100.
