Kerry Wood Retires: Justin Wood, Cubs Pitcher's Son, Hugs Father After Final Strikeout (VIDEO)

Kerry Wood Gets Hug From Son After Final Strikeout

His career may not have gone down the path many thought it would, but Kerry Wood's final game of his career turned out to be one amazing script.

Wood was set to announce his retirement Friday afternoon, but he also wanted to take the mound one last time at Wrigley Field. Despite reports that he would not go into the game against the crosstown rival White Sox, the 34-year-old got his chance in the eighth inning.

And he delivered. Wood struck out Dayan Viciedo on three pitches, the third swinging in what would be his final outing of his career. He was taken out of the game after the strikeout and as he walked off the field, Cubs fans gave him a standing ovation while his son Justin greeted him with a big hug.

"I felt like I was getting ready to pitch my first inning," Wood said after the game. "The adrenaline was the same, the nerves were the same. I can't give enough credit to the fans, just a tremendous feeling."
