Timothy Cardinal Dolan Joins Twitter, Tweets About Tim Tebow

You'll Never Guess Who Cardinal Dolan Tweeted About

Timothy Cardinal Dolan has officially joined Twitter, and the notoriously humorous Vatican official wasted no time making jokes on his account.

In his first tweet, Dolan introduced himself as "Timothy Cardinal Tebow," giving a nod to the ever-popular Christian NFL quarterback.

Dolan, who was named Archbishop of New York in 2009, continued tweeting to deliver messages regarding his appearance on SiriusXM's "The Catholic Channel" and the importance of faith.

Only one day after announcing his Twitter news on Facebook, Dolan already has more than 3,000 followers, a fairly substantial audience that may one day give Pope Benedict XVI's "own" account a run for its money.

Dolan has been an advocate for communication via social media for some time.

In February, he advised His Holiness and the College of Cardinals on the benefits of reconnecting with Catholics around the world through new avenues such as Twitter and Facebook, the New York Daily News reported.

In addition, Dolan has stressed that the content of the church's messages are just as important as the platform on which they're delivered.

"Instead of the Church being seen as pointing out what’s bad all the time, we should point out what's good," Dolan said.

The Vatican and the Pope have also been making strides with new media and technology in recent months.

At the start of the Lenten season, it was revealed the Pontifical Council for Social Communications would be using the @Pope2YouVatican handle to share inspirational messages for the 40 days leading to Easter.

The Pope sent out his first tweet in June 2011 through the Vatican news account.
