When Lena Dunham, the star of HBO's new comedy "Girls" sat down on "The View" couch Friday, she quickly referenced the talk show's discussion about the rough sex in "50 Shades of Grey" from earlier in the week.
"I was at home watching the other day, as I often am, and I heard Barbara ask Elisabeth if she enjoyed rough sex, and I felt that at that moment, I could just die, and it'd be just fine, I'd be happy," Dunham joked.
This, of course, gave Walters a perfect opening to ask about the uncomfortable sex scene in the "Girls" premiere. "I found it sort of shocking, but I also found it sort of depressing. There you are with this guy that you keep going back to, talk about rough sex, he doesn't care about you, he does it from behind ... is this the way it really is?" she asked.
"For some people," Dunham replied. "I wasn't claiming that this relationship was an entire generational representation, but more the specific story of this one girl who has a very complicated relationship to her self-esteem and her sexuality, and I hope to explore that."
Allison Williams, Dunham's "Girls" co-star and the daughter of "NBC Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams, added that, "These feelings of searching for yourself and feeling insecure and maybe trying something that you're not sure about, that is something that is universal."
