Man Uses 3D Printer To Make His Own Wedding Rings

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has made the creation of everything from a model of Stephen Colbert's head to sand-grain-sized models of racing cars possible by using machines to transform "a digital file into a finished physical object by building up that object layer by layer" using a variety of different materials, according to 3D printing company Shapeways.

And now it seems it's made happiness possible, too.

Alec Cox, a Shapeways community member, personally designed his and his fiancé's wedding rings using a 3D modeling program called Blender and then commissioned Shapeway to bring the rings to life with its 3D printing services.

"[Caitlin and I] went to the same high school but have gone to different colleges (she goes to MIT, I go to a school in Ohio) for undergraduate, so 3D printing has given me the ability to create our rings where distance has taken away the traditional ritual of shopping for rings together," Cox said, according to a post on the Shapeway blog."This let me add the amount of personalization to our rings that we wanted while keeping the price-point down (you know how crazy expensive wedding bands get)."

Take a look at the rings Alec designed below. Then, flip through the slideshow that follows to view some other cool things that have been created through 3D printing. Have you ever tried 3D printing? What do you think of this kind of technology? Let us know in the comments!
