Cai Guo-Qiang: Sky Ladder Explosion Event
The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (Downtown)
7-9 p.m.
Opening reception for "Sky Ladder," the first West Coast solo exhibition from New York-based artist Cai Guo-Qiang, who is known for his gunpowder drawings, installations, and explosion events. "Sky Ladder" features new works commissioned by MOCA, including three gunpowder drawings. Cai will present his site-specific work, "Mystery Circle: Explosion Event for MOCA," which includes the ignition of 40,000 firework rockets. The explosion will occur on the exterior wall of the museum at 7:30 p.m.; guests are asked to arrive by 6:45 p.m. "Sky Ladder" is on view through July 30, 2012.
Marius Bercea: Concrete Gardens

Romanian artist Marius Bercea explores the fall of the communist bloc and the rise of Western capitalism in his native country after 1989 through this series of paintings. "Concrete Gardens" expresses the history of a part of the world as it struggles to find its place in a new geo-political landscape. On view through May 26, 2012.

Sharon Lockhart: Double Tide

Screening of artist/filmmaker Sharon Lockhart's latest film "Double Tide," which unfolds on the coastal landscape of Seal Cove, Maine in two uninterrupted takes. This work captures the rare phenomenon of "double tide" -- when low tide occurs twice during daylight hours, once at dawn and once at dusk. Tickets are $10 and available online.
TUESDAY, APRIL 10
Barter Event: A Tribute to Ed Kienholz's Watercolors
LAND at Barney's Beanery (West Hollywood)
7-10 p.m.
Originally presented at Eugenia Butler Gallery in 1969, the "Barter Show" consisted of a series of watercolor washes on 12 x 16 inch paper, which Kienholz bartered for the sums, objects, or experiences painted on them. For this tribute, a group of contemporary artists have been commissioned to create works, following Kienholz's guidelines, to be bartered at this event at Barney's Beanery. Space is limited.
