Accidental Shooting Death Of Toddler 'Tragedy All The Way Through'

A 3-year-old Atlanta girl is dead and her 18-year-old uncle faces charges for reckless conduct and involuntary manslaughter after his gun accidentally discharged, police said.

Larenzo Montgomery and his infant niece, Takira Garlington, were visting with family at a condo in the southwest part of Atlanta on March 28. He was allegedly handling the weapon when it accidentally fired, sending a bullet into the girl's stomach.

"For this family, it's tragedy all the way through," Atlanta Homicide Commander Lt. Paul Guerrucci told The Huffington Post.

The toddler later died, the officer said.

According to My Fox Atlanta the four adults present in the apartment were all taken to Atlanta police headquarters for questioning, and police found the handgun believed to have been used in the shooting.

"I still feel like I’m still dreaming and I haven’t woke up out of the dream," Lucille Williams, Garlington's great-grandmother and Montgomery's grandmother, told WSBTV. "All we know is it was an accident and we truly do believe and we know it was an accident."

Guerrucci said the the investigation was still open and the Department of Families and Children's Services is also looking into the matter.
