Lorenzo Veal II, Highland Park Police Chief, Resigns

Highland Park Police Chief's Shocking Resignation

Highland Park Police Chief Lorenzo Veal II stepped down from his post Wednesday suddenly and without explanation.

Mayor DeAndre Windom learned about the resignation through a letter left by Veal and told WWJ he was "completely shocked" by the police chief's departure.

Veal later said his resignation resulted from differences of opinion with the mayor.

"I realized that we were not on the same page. Not where we were screaming and yelling at each other, but we were back and forth with philosophies," he told Fox 2, adding that he also needed to tend to his sick mother and wife.

Veal's resignation comes shortly after the department laid off Deputy Police Chief LaNesha Jones last week due to budget cuts.

Jones would have taken over for Veal, but now the department is in limbo. Several lieutenants will jointly run the department until a replacement police chief is appointed, Fox 2 reports.

In 2010, Highland Park's previous police chief, Theodore Cadwell, resigned after he and his deputy police chief were removed from their posts.
