"A moment of happiness,
You and I sitting on the verandah,
Apparently two, but one in soul,
You and I.
" ~Rumi

A question I'm often asked: how does one know if the person one is in relationship with is a soul mate?

Or the one you left behind, perhaps he was your soul mate?

How do you recognize a soul mate?

Here is an excerpt from my book The SoulMate Checklist...

"WHAT IF?

What if the soul mate you have been searching for has already come into your life, perhaps several times even?

According to Plato, every human is part of one soul that has been separated. The two halves search tirelessly for one another and do not rest until they come back together as a whole.

We are twinned, but we are divided selves. We have traveled together from lifetime to lifetime. We've met before, we've interacted with each other before, and we've danced before.

The experience of having known each other for a very long time gives rise to the intense yearning we feel for the other. The beloved is yearning for you as much as you are yearning for your beloved.

Falling in love with a soul mate is a spiritual experience. It's an act of the soul where two souls resonate at the same deep level with the desire for each other. Incredible journeys, personal growth, and professional opportunities take place when this happens, and you feel empowered to execute and accomplish in areas that previously were not possible, all because of the energy each brings to this spiritual partnership.

Suddenly your life takes on more color, more potency, more promise; you feel strength surge through you, and you find yourself living the larger life, taking on new forms together in a conscious partnership. Love then becomes an active creative force in your everyday life.

A soul mate is someone with whom you share unconditional love, someone you can be completely yourself with. You come together in life not only to share a life together but also to grow together as a couple, in good times and in not-so-good times.

Your soul mate inevitably holds not only the aspects of you that are positive, joyous, and wonderful--intense creativity, incredible sensitivity, deep awareness, compassion, and wisdom--but also possesses many of the same aspects as you have that are perhaps not so attractive and loving.

Soul mate love can be rocky at times, but because of the partners' capacity to love deeply, to be intimate, and to connect, they are there for each other to experience the deepest level of healing and to rise above all challenges together in order to accept each other and grow together. And you learn to give each other a little more space to be imperfect.

There is a soul mate for each of us and enough love in the Universe for all. But you have to decide if you're ready to create love and be in a soul mate relationship. This kind of deep love and connection is possible for each of us to have, provided we're willing to consciously invest a little time and energy, intention and attention, to attract what we truly want and desire.

Perhaps we have several soul mate relationships in one lifetime. Some soul mate romantic relationships, as with soul mate friendships, come with soul agreements that have an expiration date, and others can last a lifetime. You learn from each other whatever it is you need to learn. As long as you continue to love and grow together, that relationship is enduring.

Sometimes, one person is ready to move on, but the other isn't, and that can hurt. Even so, the relationship will fall away because the contract is over. It's not that there was anything wrong with you, but just that the vibration shifted, and it was time to move on. Rather than seeing your soul mate as being bad, appreciate him as being a tremendous gift to your life for the lessons you have learned and the growth you experienced."
