Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich entered federal prison in Colorado Thursday, where he has been sentenced to spend the next 14 years.

Before leaving his Chicago home, Blagojevich gave a "farewell" speech to crowds of reporters, supporters and curious residents, telling the crowd this was the "the hardest thing" he had ever done.

"As bad as it is, (this) is the beginning of another part of a long and hard journey that will only get worse before it gets better, but that this is not over," the always optimistic Blagojevich said.

Sources tell CBS 2 that Blagojevich was high-fiving other inmates at dinner Thursday night – his first at the FCI Englewood federal prison in Littleton, Colo.

Before entering the facility, the former governor stopped for lunch at a 50's-style restaurant in the Denver suburbs. He reportedly ordered two patty melts from Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in Littleton and headed for the prison.

“He seemed like he was in good spirits,” Freddy’s general manager Josh Andreakos told WBBM. “He went around and shook hands and talked to a few people and then left.”

Jurors convicted Blagojevich on 18 counts, including charges that he tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's old U.S. Senate seat. FBI wiretaps revealed a fouled-mouth Blagojevich describing the opportunity to exchange an appointment to the seat for campaign cash or a top job as "f------ golden."
