Boqueria, New York Tapas Spot Enters D.C. Market (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: New Tapas Arrival From New York Opens

WASHINGTON -- Watch out, José Andrés. New York City-based tapas hotspot Boqueria opened Thursday in the nation's capital.

The space at 19th and M streets NW formerly housed Malaysian restaurant Penang.

Boqueria currently has two other locations, both in Manhattan. It joins celebrity chef and tapas pioneer José Andrés' three D.C.-area Jaleo establishments and Mark Kuller's lauded Logan Circle restaurant, Estadio, as big names in local tapas.

At a media preview Wednesday night, The Huffington Post sampled some dishes from Boqueria's menu, which is largely identical to both of its Manhattan siblings. Items included dates stuffed with almonds and Valdeón cheese, then wrapped in bacon; crispy potatoes drizzled with “salsa brava" and a roasted garlic aioli; toast topped with fried quail eggs and chorizo; and roasted shishito peppers flecked with coarse sea salt.

Boqueria now joins the ranks of several other New York establishments to set up shop in D.C. Others include lobster roll purveyors Red Hook Lobster Pound and Luke's Lobster, family-style Italian eatery Carmine's, restaurateur Danny Meyer's burger chain Shake Shack and Texas-style barbecue spot Hill Country.
