Daniel Happ, Illinois Man, Arrested For Beating Woman With Hammer, Raping Girl, Stabbing Dog

Police: Man Beat Woman With Hammer, Raped Girl, Stabbed Dog

A west suburban Chicago man is being held on $3 million bond after he was charged with a bevy of disturbing crimes including raping an 8-year-old girl, stabbing a dog and beating a woman unconscious with a hammer.

Daniel Happ, 27, of the 1600 block of Seminole Drive in Carpentersville, Ill., was arrested early Wednesday after police were called to a residence in the 1200 block of Brookdale Drive around 12:50 a.m., the Courier-News reports. Inside the home, responding officers found an unconscious 23-year-old woman who had been bludgeoned with a hammer. They also found the woman's 8-year-old daughter, who had been sexually assaulted, and a dog that had been stabbed multiple times.

CBS Chicago reports that the woman, whose condition has not been released, was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Ill., for treatment. The girl has been taken to a safe place and the dog is being treated by an area veterinarian.

Happ faces Class X felony charges of attempted murder, armed violence and committing a felony with a Category 2 weapon and predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. He further faces two aggravated criminal sexual assault charges plus felony counts of aggravated battery, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated cruelty to animals, the Courier-News reports.

The Daily Herald reports that Happ has had problems with the law before. In 2005, he was convicted of felony residential burglary and served 78 days in prison of a 156-day sentence. Last year, a Carpentersville woman he was living with at the time got an emergency order of protection against him, but it was later dismissed.

He is expected to appear in court on March 21.
