LA Weekend Calendar: Ansel Adams, Pyrotechnics, Surf Rock & 'Romy & Michele' (VIDEO)

Have A 'Romy & Michele' Weekend!

FRIDAY
Pyrotechnics Performance
What: Most well-known for her installation "The Dinner Party," made up of hand-painted table settings dedicated to women throughout history, Judy Chicago has led by feminist example. She even went to an auto-body school to learn how to spray paint car hoods and to pyrotechnics class to learn how to handle fireworks. Tonight, she'll present a new pyrotechnics performance -- sure to excite, as did her fireworks show on Pomona College's football field last month.
When: Friday, Feb. 17, 6-8pm, pyrotechnics performance at 7:30pm, Free
Where: Nye + Brown, 2685 S. La Cienega, Culver City, CA

"Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," Reunion
What: To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the film, the cast who brings LA a Rocky Horror Picture Show performance every Saturday night at the Nuart presents an on-stage performance of the BFF '90s film. Perks: a '90s costume contest and, possibly, actors from the film. "Have a 'Romy and Michele' day!"
When: Friday, Feb. 17, 11:30pm, $10.50
Where: Nuart Theatre, 11272 Santa Monica Blvd., LA, CA

SATURDAY
Surf Rock Rocks
What: You may have heard of The Beach Boys or Dick Dale and the Del-tones. But it's hard these days to come across charming So Cal surfers who know how to make waves on the guitar. Enter the Tijuana Panthers: A group of three from Long Beach who rock catchy, energetic songs (listen below) and an old-school look to match. They're playing at a party featuring an audience-participation live sculpture by Paul Hogue and nail art (all the rage right now). Other performers will include "The Abigails," "Tomorrow's Tulips" and "Wild Pack of Canaries."
When: Saturday, Feb. 18, 8pm-2am, 21+ $5, Where: Speakeasy Art Gallery, 1679 W. 9th St., Long Beach, CA

Ansel Adams: LA, 1940
What: In 1940, when the cost of gas was 10 cents and a new car was $700, Ansel Adams took over 200 photos of Los Angeles that have remained almost completely unseen since. He was commissioned by Fortune Magazine at the time for an article on the aviation industry, and only a few of the photos he took of everyday life and street scenes were used. The rest of the photos, which Adams rediscovered and donated to the LA public library in the 1960s, are going on display for the first time. Come step into the past.
When: Sat, Feb. 18, 7-10pm opening; through Mar. 17
Where: Drkrm gallery, 727 S. Spring St., LA, CA

SUNDAY
Rock 'n' Roll Marathon
What: As iVolunteer explains, the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon this Saturday will rock tunes for competitors running a half marathon around the Rose Bowl. For brave souls running the LA marathon in March, this is great training. For those who don't run: Volunteers are needed to setup, greet and register runners, support runners on the track, distribute goods to participants and serve on the medical team.
When: Sunday, Feb. 19, marathon begins at 7:30am, but arrive early; register here to run or volunteer
Where: 1001 Rose Bowl Drive, Pasadena, CA; runners meet at the corner of N. Arroyo Blvd. and Seco St.

"Occupy for the Preoccupied"
What: Since October, Mastodon Mesa nomadic art gallery has showcased young and emerging artists each Sunday at the flea market in Fairfax High School's parking lot. The weekly event is called "ZOO" and features a different artist each month. Mastodon founder, Mya Stark, told HuffPost that ZOO has to be outside so that people who are not museum or gallery goers can come across performance and installation art accidentally. This month's shenanigans: "We are the 99¢: Occupy for the Preoccupied." For the price of 99c, friendly protestors will accept your anger and complaints of injustice so that you can continue shopping. What a bargain!
When: Sunday, Feb. 19, 11am-5pm, flea market entrance fee $2, ZOO is at the Melrose entrance
Where: Melrose Trading Post, 7850 Melrose Ave., LA, CA
CORRECTION: A previous version of this story stated the location as Melrose High. The name of the high school is Fairfax High School.

MONDAY
Oscar-Nominated Shorts!
What: Short Films is one of the Oscar categories that we sit through every year having no idea what they're talking about. Which is why there's an effort to screen some of them before the awards! All weekend long, various LA theaters are screening the five nominated live action shorts and the five nominated animated shorts. See the Landmark's website for descriptions of all ten films. Impress your friends at this year's Oscars party!
When: Friday-Monday, Feb. 17-20, various times
Where: Various LA theaters

From Feb. 16 - Mar. 3 only, Chaya "Executive Corporate Chef" Shigefumi Tachibe will serve up more varieties of the mollusks than you knew existed. Including both hot and cold dishes ranging from $8 to $29, the menu will serve such dishes as "fresh oysters on the half shell including the sweet and fruity Kumamoto variety from Washington; Fanny Bay from British Columbia, that is both sweet and salty; and the Hama Hama grown in Washington, known for its firm meat and briny essence." Our pearl of wisdom: get 'em while you can!
