Kevin Brennan, NYPD Officer Shot In The Head In Bushwick, Expected To Make Recovery

NYPD Cop Shot In The Head In Brooklyn

An NYPD officer shot while chasing a suspect in Brooklyn is in critical condition Wednesday morning at Bellevue Hospital but doctors say he is expected to make a full recovery.

CBS reports that police responded Tuesday night to a report of shots fired at 140 Moore Street in Bushwick. When they arrived, 3 suspects could be seen running from the building.

Officer Kevin Brennan, 29, chased down 21-year-old Luis "Baby" Ortiz, who allegedly turned around and fired one shot at Brennan, hitting him in the base of the skull.

Brennan is believed to have fired one shot in return, missing Ortiz.

Hours later, according to DNAinfo, officers located Ortiz in his uncle's apartment at 390 Bushwick Avenue. He was arrested without incident and was not injured.

Ortiz is also wanted for questioning in the New Year's Day homicide of 34-year-old Shannon McKinney.

Shortly before Ortiz was detained Tuesday night, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly visited Brennan at the hospital, where doctors had just removed the bullet from his skull.

"Tonight we have someone who have someone who has dedicated his life to protecting all of us, who has had a much too close brush with death," said Bloomberg during a late night press conference at the hospital, adding that Brennan had told the mayor about his 6-week-old daughter. "Thankfully tonight I think there's no reason to think [Maeve's] daddy won't be there to see her crawl for the first time and, in good time dance at her wedding."

And Ray Kelly, while holding up the bloody bullet that surgeons had just removed, said, "He is one lucky young man."

The bloodshed comes a month and a half after the tragic shooting death of officer Peter Figoski, in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, and just days after an off-duty cop in Brooklyn shot and killed a man who was trying to mug him.
