SAG Awards Red Carpet! 2012 Looks & Color Trends

I guess it really is a Brad, Brad World... oh my! So, what did last night's red carpet say? First and foremost, it said we are indeed a sexy bunch. And our tastes in color are all over the map!

The direct relationship between celebrity fashion trends and your everyday life is clear and concise. Whatever Hollywood stylists are dressing celebrities in during awards season will be front and center in fashion, accessories and even your home. I guess it really is a Brad, Brad World... oh my! So, what did last night's red carpet say? First and foremost, it said we are indeed a sexy bunch. And our tastes in color are all over the map!

So, let's talk color... or the lack of it. Nude hues seemed to dominate last night. While they looked lovely on perfectly toned and spray-tanned bodies all airbrushed and perfectly coiffed, this was like a thorn in my side. The reality is that nudes and "blush" tones aren't all that hot on most of us. Moreover, it's a tad on the bridal side. Nevertheless, there were some fabulous nude standouts. Viola Davis in ivory Marchesa looked exquisite. Rose Byrne rocked that jumpsuit in Elie Saab (OBSESSED with that jumpsuit!). Lea Michele and Julianne Marguilies both shined in shades of grey. I would venture to say we will start seeing more champagne-hued clothing moving into summer and fall accompanied by similar looks in the home. Soft touches, shiny metallics up against gentle cashmeres, subdued prints and sexy yet elegant touches. A popular look, although not one of my personal favorites.

Black also made quite a showing. Often referred to as "safe," there were several looks that took basic black and pushed the envelope. With a little help from royal favorite Jenny Packham, Angelina Jolie glommed it up in a metallic black halter looking fierce and back-to-her-roots-hardcore-sexy. Also rocking Packham was Ashlee Simpson (Ashlee Simpson??) in a rather goth-looking getup that oddly seemed to work because of that fabulous sparkle and shine. Recently, we have been seeing more black in the home, which I am a huge fan of. While we love black in fashion, most are always so afraid of using black in the home. I say, don't be. Black paints, accessories, high gloss black furnishings... I think we are finally ready to take more risks of this kind.

And lastly, my personal favorite look: bright, bold color. Thank you Michelle Williams and Valentino for bringing us the perfect shade of red, like only Mr. Valentino can. Emily Blunt radiated in emerald green Oscar de la Renta and Sofia Vergara worked that hot pink Marchesa like a pro. They all looked beautiful, healthy and confident. That's what bright color says. You cannot hide in a magenta dress, after all. It says, "I want to make a statement" in a happy way. I think this is why we are seeing, and will continue to see, these similar looks in the home. The way to avoid having a home that looks like a bag of Skittles exploded on Rainbow Brite is to pick and choose carefully and then take something away at the last minute. Sort of how we wish Kristin Wiig did with that choker... ugh, sorry! Push the limit and then go back and exercise a tad of restraint. Pillows, rugs, throws, a chair, a desk or a piece of art. Look at designers like Jonathan Adler and Kate Spade and Valentino. We will continue to see more color in the home. As for Tangerine Tango, we're still figuring out that one. But, it's only January.

When it comes to fashion, lifestyle and trends we never really know what's around the next corner..
