4-Year-Old Girl Killed By Falling TV

A University Park, Ill. child was killed Sunday afternoon when a television fell on her head -- the third time such an accident has occurred in the Chicago area since last fall.

Gianna Hadjis, 4, of the 600 block of Sullivan Lane Drive, was pronounced dead just before 3 p.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center, the Chicago Tribune reports.

An autopsy has been scheduled for later Monday, but it is believed head trauma was the child's cause of death. Further details of the tragedy have not yet been disclosed by police, according to NBC Chicago.

In November, Shaniya Singleton, 3, of Chicago's Hamilton Park neighborhood, was fatally crushed when she bumped into a TV stand, causing a 27-inch television to fall on top of her. In late October, Karl Clermont, 6, of suburban Arlington Heights, was killed in a similar accident.

Dr. Karen Sheehan, of the Children's Memorial Hospital, told CBS Chicago parents should buy straps to help secure televisions and other furniture pieces. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, 245 children under the age of 8 were killed by fallen televisions, mostly older, box-style models, and other furniture between 2000 and 2010.
