Sam Schmid, University Of Arizona Student, Emerges From Coma As Parents Considered Organ Donation

As Sam Schmid's parents started to accept that their son might never wake up, the 21-year-old snapped out of a coma, ABC reports.

Back in October, Schmid -- a junior at the University of Arizona -- was involved in a car accident that killed his friend and roommate. Schmid was airlifted to the Barrow Neurological Institute where doctors performed surgery and was believed to be brain dead.

But, just as the family was about to give up hope, Schmid began responding to commands.

"Nobody could ever give me a better Christmas present than this -- ever, ever, ever," Schmid’s mother, Susan Regan, told the news outlet.

Doctors now say that with intensive therapy, Schmid may make a full recovery.

"I am dumb-founded with his incredible recovery in such a short time," Schmid’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Robert Spetzler told ABC. "His recovery was really remarkable considering the extent of his lethal injuries."
