A: I've been the IT guy for my family and friends for as long as I can remember. I was the first call for programming a VCR, setting up a home theater, trying to get printers connected, and (of course) getting WiFi networks up and running. As more and more people got online, the number of calls I received for network troubleshooting skyrocketed. My one quick fix was always to hook all of the networking gear up to a bright red surge protector. I'd write Internet kill switch on it and anyone could open up a closet, head down to the basement, or reach into the cabinet to reset their network.

As someone who loves design and well thought out products, this Band-Aid solution drove me crazy. Also, as the Internet runs more and more of our homes, having an entire network hinge on a $5 surge protector was just crazy. So in the beginning of 2014, I set out with Nate and Amos (my co-founders) to start building the WiFi network that we all wanted. This is only the beginning!

A: At every stage, your resources are constrained. In the beginning you have a great idea, but you don't have any capital to get started. Once you figure out how to get a little capital into the business, you can't hire people quickly enough to make sufficient progress. This forces you to think creatively and take some pretty big risks, not all of which will pay out in the end. But you have to take the risks in order to succeed and find what works for your business.

A: I'd argue that the traditional WiFi router market is saturated, but not the WiFi system market. While other routers may come recommended with other products like range extenders, none of these are actually what we regard as a WiFi system. A WiFi system is one that has multiple access points that are built to work and communicate with one another, creating the best connected experience throughout your entire home. You simply cannot get that with today's traditional router/range extender setups.

The technological differentiator that eero has to these other traditional WiFi routers is that we built our WiFi system using mesh networking technology. Yes, large scale WiFi systems have existed in the enterprise environment for many years, but they typically rely on lots of structure wiring (aka Ethernet) to provide connectivity. In homes, which typically have much less structured wiring, you really need a full mesh solution.
