When it comes to my eye makeup, I take the safe route by brushing on a metallic gold shade that I believe works best for my dark brown eyes. But according to Brett Freedman, celebrity makeup artist and creator of Vanitymark Cosmetics, this is the most common mistake women make when choosing eyeshadow.
"[They] get too matchy-matchy," says Freedman. "The 'I have green eyes so I wear green shadow' days are gone. It's all about contrast. Shadow is meant to frame the eye, not overpower it."
Freedman adds, "A cool tone blue eye will stand out more if you add a warm, bronze shadow. On the other side of the spectrum, you can add a dark blue to make brown eyes look more caramel."
Read on for the pro's step-by-step instructions on how to apply the best eyeshadow for your eye color:
Brown eyes
Try a navy eyeliner against a neutral shadow. Start with a satin bone color on lid. Then apply a matte taupe in the crease and a shimmery champagne along the brow bone. Using a blue pencil that has a bit of pop, dot and dash along the top lash line. Blend and smoke out the line. Draw on a touch of color underneath the lid to continue the vibe, but not so heavy that it will drag the eye down.
Blue eyes
A bronze eye look works best. Use a matte taupe in the crease and a satin bone shade underneath the brow area. Take a shimmery bronze shadow and apply to lids with a damp brush. Once dry, this will create a glazed finish that will last much longer than using a cream shadow. With a dark brown pencil, closely line the top and bottom lash lines to deepen the effect.
Green eyes
Pick a plum eyeshadow quad so the coordinating is made simple. Choose the light, lavender shade for lid, the middle-toned color for crease and highlight with the palest shimmery shade. Use the deepest plum shade to bring out the outer corners. Finish with a shimmery plum liquid liner on just the top, very close to the lash line.
Hazel eyes
Green is the best, yet most difficult shade to use with this eye color. So you'd want to work with sheer, muted greens. Apply a matte taupe in the crease and a champagne shimmer on the brow bone. Sweep a light celery shade onto lids. Line the eyes all the way around with a deep evergreen pencil, smudging with your finger as you go along.
And don't forget to curl lashes and layer on mascara after applying eyeshadow to complete the look.
