Man Playing With Gun Arrested For His Role In Teen's Shooting

Police have arrested a man who accidentally shot a 16-year-old boy while playing with a gun on the South Side.

The victim, an employee of the convenience store on the 1800 block of East 71st St. where the gun was discharged Thursday evening, was shot in his right arm and side, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The adult male in custody said he and the boy were "goofing around" with the gun, police News Officer Hector Alfaro told the newspaper. Police do not know who was holding the gun when it was fired.

The older man drove the victim to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, and he was later transferred to Stroger Hospital of Cook County due to the severity of his injuries, police told the Chicago Tribune. He is currently in stable condition.

The older man is in police custody, the Sun-Times reports, but no charges have been filed yet. Calumet area detectives are investigating, and police found a gun belonging to the man at the scene.
