Tom Dart is the Sheriff of Cook County, the second most populous county in the United States – incorporating Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. As Cook County Sheriff, Tom has brought an aggressive, yet innovative approach to law enforcement. Tom oversees Cook County Jail, the largest single site jail in the country as well as the largest mental institiution in the country. He has aggressively called for a compassionate approach to the mentally ill, arguing that the criminalization of mental illness is a blight on our society. In 2009, Time Magazine named Sheriff Dart one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World as a result of his decision to install a moratorium on evictions in Cook County after banks admitted to robo-signing foreclosure documents.
