Tiya Miles is a Professor of American Culture and Afroamerican & African Studies at the University of Michigan. She is the author of The Cherokee Rose: A Novel of Gardens and Ghosts (2015) and two prize-winning history books, Ties That Bind: The Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom (2005) and The House on Diamond Hill: A Cherokee Plantation Story (2010). She is the founder of ECO Girls (Environmental and Cultural Opportunities for Girls), and in 2011 she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow.
