Timothy S. Harlan, MD, FACP

Practicing physician, Executive Director of The Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine

"Eating well and eating healthy is the same thing," says Dr. Tim Harlan, aka "Dr. Gourmet," who discovered his love of food long before embarking on a successful career as a physician. By the age of 18, Harlan was managing his first restaurant and had learned cooking techniques from some of the finest chefs. He subsequently opened an intimate French Bistro at age 22. Returning to school to pursue a degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Dr. Harlan found his way to medicine. While completing his degree at Emory University School of Medicine, he began writing about the clear link between food and health, blending his extensive knowledge of food and nutrition with his medical expertise. On television, "Dr. Gourmet" has been the on-air expert for the Food Network show "Cooking Thin" and host of the DIY Network show "AskDIY." His 2002 public broadcast program "The Dr. Gourmet Show" earned an Emmy Award for excellence in medical programming. As a recognized expert, Dr. Harlan has also appeared on KWGN and KMGH in Denver, WJXT in Jacksonville, KNTV in San Francisco, KPIX in San Francisco, WTMJ and WITI in Milwaukee, and WLS and WGN in Chicago, IL, demonstrating how to cook healthy meals. In addition, he has been featured on CNN, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal as well as other top-tier media outlets. Teaching patients that eating great food is the easiest path to health, Dr. Harlan launched DrGourmet.com as the definitive evidence-based source for diet, health, wellness and lifestyle information. His book, "Just Tell Me What to Eat!" is a 6-week meal plan that takes the guesswork out of eating well. It emphasizes delicious, hearty meals, a Mediterranean-style diet, high-quality calories, and home cooking whenever possible. Timothy S. Harlan, MD, FACP, is a practicing, board-certified Internist. He is currently the Associate Dean for Clinical Services of Tulane University School of Medicine; Executive Director of the Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine; Medical Director for Tulane University Medical Group; Associate Chief of General Internal Medicine; and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Harlan attended medical school at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, and pursued his residency at Emory University School of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in Atlanta, GA.
