Theresa Demarest

Filmmaker and musician

Theresa Demarest, is a Portland Oregon- based first time filmmaker, longtime musician, and now, producer/ director of a film about Keiko, the orca star of the Free Willy movies. Her company, Joshua Records, LLC was started about 20 years ago to promote the activities of her primary focus then of music concerts and songwriting with her band Theresa Demarest and Good Company.

Theresa spent several years collecting footage and interviews, writing and collaborating on an entirely original soundtrack, and bringing all the pieces up to current technological screening standards, to create the definitive biography of Keiko for his fans, for the curious, and for all film viewers who enjoy a tightly told story riding on real-life risks and consequences. With input from audiences during a successful run with an earlier, standard-definition cut at national film festivals a couple of years ago, Theresa has re-cut the film, added newly acquired historical footage, "up-res'd" to High Definition, and remastered to full 5.1 Surround Sound. Keiko The Untold Story (as it was titled then) won 20 Film Festival Official Selections from New York to Denver, from Los Angeles to Green Bay, from Washington, D.C., to San Francisco. The film also won awards for Best Director, Best Documentary, Audience Favorite, Best Editor, and more.

KEIKO THE UNTOLD STORY includes film footage of Keiko in Iceland filmed by Jean Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society, Free Willy Keiko Foundation, OrcaLab, Earthviews Productions, and more with music composed by very talented Portland based musicians some of whom are Grammy-Award nominees.
