Steven W. Hawkins

With more than 25 years of experience as an advocate for justice, Steven W. Hawkins brings a strong background in working across party lines to achieve consensus and drive dissimilar groups toward shared goals for reform. Hawkins began his career as an attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, representing indigent persons in capital cases and other criminal proceedings across the country. His efforts led to the exoneration of three teens who were wrongfully convicted. Since then, he has held numerous leadership positions in civil and human rights organizations, including the NAACP and Amnesty International USA. He has worked within the philanthropic community on criminal justice reforms, serving as a senior program manager at the JEHT Foundation and program executive at Atlantic Philanthropies. Hawkins holds a B.A. from Harvard University and a J.D. from New York University.
