Seamus Carey, Ph.D.

President, Transylvania University

Seamus Carey became the 26th president of Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky., in 2014. Dr. Carey is a leading voice on the relevance and future of liberal education.

Before coming to Transylvania, he was the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. Previously he was chairman of the philosophy department at Manhattan College. Dr. Carey earned his undergraduate degree in economics from Vassar College in 1987 and went on to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. in philosophy, both from Fordham University. His areas of philosophical interest include 20th-century continental philosophy, environmental philosophy and ethics.

Dr. Carey’s numerous articles and books focus on the intersection of philosophy, parenting and family life. His writing credits include “Growing Up with Your Children: 7 Turning Points in the Lives of Parents,” “The Faithful Parent: Discovering the Spirit of Purposeful Parenting” and “The Whole Child: Restoring Wonder to the Art of Parenting.”
