Roderick Carey

Educational researcher, writer and teacher educator

Roderick L. Carey, Ph.D., an educational researcher, writer, and teacher educator, has been a Huffington Post contributor since 2011. Currently, Roderick is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Urban Education at the University of Pittsburgh. His writing and research center on the the college going and future ambitions of Black and Latino adolescent boys in urban school contexts and he has presented nationally and internationally on issues related to the schooling experiences of boys of color in urban contexts, teacher assessment for equity, intersectionality, and youth civic engagement. His teaching expertise is primarily on the foundations of urban education, qualitative research methods, and K-12 teaching for diversity and equity. In 2015, he graduated with a PhD from the department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership at University of Maryland College Park, where he specialized in Minority and Urban Education. Prior to beginning full-time graduate study in the Fall of 2009, Roderick spent four years as a high school English teacher, coach, and instructional leader in Washington, DC charter schools. Roderick moved to the Washington DC area in 2005, after receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Secondary Education from Boston College and a Master of Education in Human Development and Psychology from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
