Michael J. Kaplan

Michael J. Kaplan assumed the position ofAIDS United’s President and CEO in November 2012. As a self-described “mission-driven” professional, Kaplan has dedicated his career to working for or heading up organizations serving people living with HIV/AIDS, and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, and queer (LGBTQ) community.

Prior to coming to AIDS United, Kaplan was the Executive Director of Cascade AIDS Project (CAP), the largest and oldest AIDS service organization serving Oregon and South West Washington. During his tenure at CAP, Kaplan led the organization through a re-organization that resulted in reduced operating costs, expanded programming and increased revenue through fundraising and development efforts. Under his leadership, CAP was rated for the first time by over 1,000 CEOs as one of the ten most admired non-profits in Oregon in 2009, and was selected as one of the best 100 non-profits to work for in Oregon in 2010, 2011 & 2012.

From 1999-2008, Kaplan held several senior management positions at the Academy for Educational Development (AED) including Vice President for International HIV/AIDS Programs. His work included technical and managerial leadership for both domestic and international HIV/AIDS programs as part of AED’s Center on AIDS & Community Health (COACH).

Kaplan’s work with the LGBTQ community includes Directorship tenures at the National Youth Advocacy Coalition in Washington, D.C., and District 202 in Minneapolis, MN, an organization that he helped create. He has served on the Board of Directors of several HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ organizations.

Kaplan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Child Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Family, Vocational and Community Education, both from University of Minnesota.
