Executive Director, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN)
Marc Van Ameringen is Executive Director of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), an alliance driven by the vision of a world without malnutrition. Under his leadership since 2005, GAIN has become a leading player globally in efforts to end hunger and malnutrition. Today, GAIN programs are improving the lives of over 800 million people in over forty countries, of which more than half are women and children.
In 2014, during the World Economic Forum’s Annual Assembly held in Davos, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon awarded Marc with the World Food Programme’s ‘Hunger Hero Award’ for his efforts in combatting world hunger and malnutrition. In 2010 he received the Visionary Award from Hellen Keller International for GAIN’s bold strategies and innovations in reducing global malnutrition.
Marc is a member of the GSK / Save the Children R&D Advisory Board and the Nutrition Advisory Board of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has served on the Lancet Nutrition Series Advisory Committee and the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on U.S. Commitment to Global Health. In 2009, he was nominated Vice Chair of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Nutrition.
Prior to joining GAIN, Marc was Vice President of the Micronutrient Initiative (MI), and Special Advisor to the G8 Summit within the Canadian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. His most important contribution to international development was the key role he played in supporting Nelson Mandela and the ANC in building a nonracial South Africa. From 1992 to 2002, Marc was a based in Africa as a Director for the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), where he supported the reconstruction efforts in South Africa, and managed major programs across the African continent.
He has edited numerous books, three of which have introductions written by Nelson Mandela, and has also written many articles in peer review journals.
