Joel Bion

Senior Vice President, Cisco Research and Advanced Development

Joel Bion leads Cisco's Advanced Development organization. In this role, he works to ensure that new technologies are known and adopted where appropriate across Cisco's engineering divisions, and that our topmost engineering talent is utilized to the best results, as well as partnering with CTOs and business leaders to help ensure that outreach to external organization in terms of forward-looking work moves as efficiently as possible. This includes work with universities, standards development organizations (SDOs), government agencies and open source teams. 

Bion has held numerous positions at Cisco since joining the company in 1989 as its first manager of technical support, where he established many elements of Cisco's customer-first culture that continue today. Before his current position, he served for close to eight total years as Senior Vice President of the division now called the Network Operating System Technology Group (NOSTG). Since that time, he has returned to his first love, working more directly on problems concerning future engineering opportunities, engaging top engineers.
