Cook and scribbler

Isabel Cowles Murphy is a Houston-based cook, gardener and Environmental Law student. She has worked both as a food journalist and as an educator with Recipe for Success Foundation, a program that targets childhood obesity by helping at-risk students understand their food's journey from seed to plate. Isabel is also a member of the board of Legacy Land Trust, which has preserved more than 8,000 acres in the greater Houston area. She has recently joined the board of Writers in the Schools, (WITS) an organization that engages children in the pleasure and power of reading and writing.

Prior to moving to Houston, TX, she worked as a food writer and editor for Alfred A. Knopf in New York. Isabel has lived in Argentina and France, exploring both local and urban cuisine with a focus on food production and preparation. She spent time as a videographer in Andhra Pradesh province in Southern India, documenting sustainable and autonomous food-producing communities. Isabel has also been a full-time organic tomato farmer and an apprentice to the one of the first local food chefs in Houston. Isabel is the author of BreadandCourage, a cooking blog. She is an avid yogi.
