Chancellor of UCLA
As chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Dr. Gene Block oversees the university’s three-part mission of education, research and service. Chancellor Block is a champion of public universities and has called for UCLA to define for California and the nation the role of a great public research university in a major urban center in the 21st century. The priorities he has set for UCLA during his administration include academic excellence, diversity, civic engagement and financial security.
A biologist, Dr. Block is a member of the faculty in the David Geffen School of Medicine and the College of Letters and Science. He also leads a research laboratory studying the neurophysiological basis of biological timing, with a central focus on age-related changes in sleep and alertness.
Previously, he served as vice president and provost of the University of Virginia.
