Ed Mierzwinski

Consumer Program Director, U.S. PIRG

I've been a consumer advocate with U.S. PIRG, the national federation for the non-profit, non-partisan state Public Interest Research Groups, since 1989. I testify before Congress and state legislatures and do other advocacy (write reports, speak at conferences, etc.) on a variety of consumer issues. My primary issue is financial reform with an emphasis on defense of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) set up after the 2008 financial collapse triggered by unregulated Wall Street shenanigans. Oh, that collapse led to a Great Recession; millions lost homes, millions lost jobs; millions lost trillions in retirement savings. Of course, I also work on credit bureau mistakes, ID theft, toy and product safety, air passenger rights, unfair bank fees, consumer legal rights, etc.. I often say that "The idea of the CFPB needs no defense, only more defenders" (borrowed from Edward Abbey, wilderness defender).
