Catheryn Yashar, M.D.

Chief, Gynecologic Cancer and Breast Cancer Services, UCSD Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences

Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Dr. Yashar graduated Summa Cum Laude (3rd in class) in 1986 from Vanderbilt University with a B.A. degree in Biology. She received her M.D. from Northwestern University in 1991, and completed an internship and residency at the University of Michigan Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Ann Arbor, MI.



After a 2-year fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Louisville, Dr. Yashar decided to enter the field of Radiation Oncology and completed her Radiation Oncology Residency at the University of Louisville. Prior to being recruited to the UCSD Department of Radiation Oncology in 2006, Dr. Yashar served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Louisville.



Dr. Yashar’s clinical and research focus has centered on cancers in women, notably breast and gynecologic cancers. Her surgical training is invaluable particularly in the application of brachytherapy in both breast and gynecologic tumors. She currently serves as the Chief of the Gynecologic Cancer and Breast Cancer Services in the UCSD Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences. She is also part of the BC5 project, a recently formed consortium organized to broaden awareness about breast cancer treatment options.



Dr. Yashar has also been an invited lecturer at National Review Courses for Radiation Oncology, including the Osler Review Course. She has also been an invited speaker on Gynecologic Oncology issues at numerous national meetings including the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) and the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS). She is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology and Physics and an editor of the textbook Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology.



Outside the hospital, Dr. Yashar is a devoted mother of 3 sons, Will, Jake and Drew. Her husband, Arnie, is a local Orthopedic Surgeon at Kaiser Permanente.
