Bill Sweetland

Bill Sweetland has been following education in Chicago for 40 years. Educated at the University of Chicago (M.A. in American History, l972), Sweetland is a disciple of the great American literary critic, historian, teacher and man of letters Jacques Barzun. Sweetland’s views on education were formed by the writings of Barzun, George Bernard Shaw, William James and Friedrich Nietzsche.

Sweetland has served on the Local School Council for Bret Harte Elementary School on the South Side of Chicago for the last seven and a half years. He has lived in Hyde Park for the last 43 years. Sweetland is married to a former Chicago public school teacher, and has himself tutored public school students for the last 20 years.
