Heart Surgeon at Cleveland Clinic and author of Heart 411: The Only Guide to Heart Health You'll Ever Need

Marc Gillinov, MD, is a staff cardiac surgeon at the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic and he is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He has worked at the Clinic since 1997, though his experience there dates back to 1978, when he spent his summers during high school as a researcher and assistant in cardiac surgery under surgeon Toby Cosgrove, MD, who is now CEO of Cleveland Clinic. A graduate of Yale University, and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. Gillinov has special expertise in robotic valve surgery; mitral valve repair; aortic valve replacement; surgical treatment and minimally invasive surgery for atrial fibrillation; and minimally invasive mitral valve, aortic valve, and tricuspid valve surgery. He has been instrumental in the development of new, less invasive treatment approaches for mitral valve disease and atrial fibrillation.

In some circles, Dr. Gillinov is best known as the cardiac surgeon who performed heart surgery on comedian and Academy Award winning actor Robin Williams. In 2012, Dr. Gillinov co-authored the book "Heart 411: The Only Heart Guide You Will Ever Need" with Steven Nissen, MD.
