Calgary Tornado Warning 2015: Funnel Cloud Spotted

Residents in SW Calgary are being told to take shelter and exercise extreme caution.

Calgary residents took shelter in basements across the southwest quadrant of the city after a tornado warning was issued Wednesday afternoon.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” said the Environment Canada website. “Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.”

Environment Canada called off the tornado warning for the city shortly after 2 p.m. MST, but a tornado watch remains in effect for a large swath of area southeast of the city, including Bassano, Chestermere, Vulcan and Strathmore.

The storm hovered over the city’s southwest area, at times threatening the neighbourhoods of Cedarbrae, Bridlewood, Woodlands, Lake Bonavista, Canyon Meadows and Shawnessy, among others.

Residents were advised to stay indoors, citing the possibility of golf ball-sized hail outside.

Many photos of the cloud were posted to social media, and some videos posted to Twitter showed the ominous cloud hanging in the sky over Calgary:
